The first 1000 days of a newborn's life are key to ensure adequate cognitive, socio-affective and psychomotor development. The World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Ministry of Health of El Salvador (MINSAL) recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and continued breastfeeding for up to two years of life, because of its contribution to good nutrition, health and child development (WHO, 2021). Breast milk is the ideal food during the first six months of life and thereafter continues to provide nutrients and antibodies when accompanied by adequate complementary feeding.
